Most driveway culvert replacements are a one-day job. We pull the old pipe, re-cut the ditch flowline to true grade, bed and set new pipe sized to the drainage area — not to whatever was in the hole — and rebuild the drive over it.

The fundamentals matter. Sizing for the drainage area. Setting it at the right depth and grade so water flows. Bedding it on a clean base so it doesn't deflect or settle. Backfilling in lifts and compacting properly. Adding stone aprons at the inlet and outlet so it doesn't wash out. Done right once beats done over and over.

A repair is when the pipe is mostly sound but the ends, the rock apron, or the crossing over it have failed — we rebuild what's gone and leave the existing pipe in service. A replacement is when the pipe itself is rusted through, crushed, or undersized — we dig out the old one and set a new pipe at the right size and grade. A new install is a fresh crossing where there's never been one — a new driveway entrance, a field lane over a ditch, or a road culvert. Whichever it is, we size it for the drainage area first so it actually moves the water.
Culvert replacement is its own job, and it's the one most people are actually calling about. The pipe is already there. It's rusted through, crushed, separated at a joint, silted shut, or just too small for what runs through it now — and patching it is throwing good money after bad.

How we do a culvert replacement: cut and remove the driveway or lane over the pipe, dig out the old culvert and haul it off, re-cut the ditch flowline to true grade — this is the step that gets skipped, and it's why replacements fail twice — bed the new pipe on stone, set it to grade, backfill and compact in lifts so the drive doesn't settle, rock the inlet and outlet ends against scour, and rebuild the driveway surface over the top. Most residential driveway replacements are a one-day job and you're driving on it that evening.
We size the new pipe to the drainage area coming to it, not to whatever was in the hole. If the old one was undersized, replacing it with the same diameter just buys you the same problem again. And if your township or county road district has a permit and a minimum-size requirement for an entrance culvert, we'll build to it — we do this work in public works settings regularly and we're used to the spec.

Repair is for a pipe that's still structurally sound — a washed-out end, scour around the inlet, a separated joint you can get to, silt packed in, a headwall that's failed while the culvert itself is fine. Four signs mean replacement, not repair. The bottom is rusted out — corrugated metal goes along the invert first, so a pipe can look fine from the end and have no floor left in the middle. The driveway over it is sagging or has a hole in it, which means the pipe is collapsing or backfill is washing into it. It's undersized, so water backs over the drive in a hard rain or scours around the ends every spring. Or the joints have separated and soil is migrating in, which shows up as a sinkhole over the line. Any of those and a patch just buys you the same problem again.
