There is no single trench depth. Frost governs anything holding standing water — water services and yard hydrants go below it, and the design frost depth around here is generally in the 30 to 36 inch range with roughly 42 inches of cover the common target on a water service. Fall governs sewer, septic and drain tile: the outlet elevation sets the depth, not the weather. Code and the utility govern electrical and gas. "How deep does the trench have to be?" is the second question on most digging calls, right after what it costs. People expect one number. There isn't one — and the reason there isn't is worth understanding, because it's also the reason a trench that was dug to the wrong rule has to be opened back up.
Every buried line answers to one of two governing rules. Get the rule right and the depth follows.
Two Rules Decide Every Trench
Rule one: frost. If the line holds standing water when nobody's using it, it has to sit below the frost line or it will freeze and split. That's water services, yard hydrants, livestock waterer lines, and irrigation mains you intend to leave charged.
Rule two: fall. If the line moves water by gravity, the depth is whatever it takes to hold continuous slope from where the water starts to where it's allowed to leave. That's sewer laterals, septic lines, drain tile, French drains, downspout and sump runs, and culverts. Frost has almost nothing to do with these, because a line running on grade drains instead of standing full.
There's a third category — electrical and gas — where neither of those decides it. Code and the utility do, and neither of those is our call to make.
The Frost Line In Central Illinois
Design frost depth in this part of the state generally lands in the 30 to 36 inch range, and central Illinois building departments commonly require footings at a minimum of 36 inches below finished grade. That figure isn't what frost actually reaches in a normal Coles County winter — most years it's well short of it. It's set for the bad winter, and it's the bad winter that splits a water line.
A few things people get wrong about that number:
- It's measured from finished grade, not from today's dirt. If the yard is going to be cut down two feet during the build, the trench has to be deep enough to still be below frost after the cut.
- Bare ground freezes deeper than sod. Snow cover and turf insulate. A line running under a plowed drive or a gravel lane sees frost further down than the same line under lawn.
- The building department has the final say. The exact required depth is set by the authority having jurisdiction for your address, and it varies from town to town. We dig to the number your inspector, plumber or engineer gives us.
Depth By Line Type
Here's what typically drives the depth on the lines we open trenches for. These are the field ranges, not permission to skip your permit — the number that binds is the one on your plan or from your inspector.
- Water service line — below frost, and roughly 42 inches of cover is the common central Illinois target on a service run from the main, meter or well to the building. Your licensed plumber or the water department sets the figure and makes the connection; we open, bed and backfill the trench to their depth.
- Yard hydrant and livestock waterer lines — same frost logic, with the added catch that the hydrant's own shutoff and drain have to sit below frost too. A hydrant that drains into frozen ground is a hydrant that freezes.
- Sewer lateral and septic lines — fall, not frost. Depth starts at the building drain invert and increases the whole way to the tank or the main.
- Drain tile and French drains — the outlet elevation decides it. Yard and downspout lines are often a foot or two down; field laterals commonly sit in the 30 to 42 inch range; footing drains sit at the base of the footing.
- Electrical conduit and direct burial — the depth comes out of the electrical code and the utility's spec, and it changes depending on whether the run is direct-buried cable, conduit, or under a driveway. Your licensed electrician gives us the number and does the wire; we do the trench and the backfill.
- Gas service lines — the gas utility or your licensed fitter specs the depth and makes the connection. We dig to it.
- Culvert lines — not really a depth question at all. What matters is the flow line elevation the ditch demands and enough cover over the top of the pipe that traffic doesn't crush it.
When Fall Sets The Depth Instead
This is the one that catches people, because it runs opposite to the instinct. On a gravity line, digging deeper can make the job worse.
A drain tile line has to reach an outlet — daylight in a ditch, a creek bank, a receiving main, a sump. That outlet sits at a fixed elevation you don't get to choose. Work backward from it at the slope the line needs, and the depth at every point along the run is already decided. Dig the far end deeper than that and you've built a low spot the water can't climb out of. It'll hold water, silt in, and look exactly like a broken line a year later.
That's also why "the tile isn't keeping up" so often turns out to be grade or an outlet rather than pipe size. What size drain tile do I need covers the diameter half of that question; the depth half is this one.
Same logic on a sewer lateral. It leaves the building at a fixed invert and has to fall the whole way. Ten feet out it might be three feet down; a hundred and fifty feet out it can be considerably deeper, and that's not optional.
Five Things That Change The Number On Site
1. The outlet. On any gravity line, everything is worked back from where water is allowed to leave. If the outlet is higher than people assumed, the whole run gets shallower or the route changes.
2. What's already buried. Locates come back and the trench has to cross, clear, or dodge existing lines. A crossing frequently forces a deeper section than the rest of the run.
3. Water in the hole. A high water table turns a deep trench into a pumping job, and wet trench walls behave differently than dry ones.
4. Rock and hardpan. Central Illinois is mostly clay and it digs clean, but hardpan layers and old buried concrete are real and they slow a dig down hard.
5. Where it crosses a drive or a road. Cover requirements go up under traffic, and the backfill and compaction under a crossing matter more than anywhere else on the run — that's where a settled trench shows up as a dip in your driveway.
Deeper Is Not Free
Depth doesn't scale gently. Twice as deep is more than twice the work: there's more spoil to pull, stage and put back, the trench gets wider as it gets deeper, the machine works slower at reach, and past a certain depth an open trench needs a protective system and a competent person on site under the trench-safety rules. That's not a corner anybody cuts — trench walls kill people every year in this country, and a wall that looks fine collapses without warning.
Practically, it means depth is one of the first things we're looking at on the walk, along with access, spoil room, and where the outlet is.
